SCIENCE COMMUNICATION

Clear communication of psychological science to the public is sorely needed in order to rebuild trust between scientists and ordinary citizens. To gain more experience presenting my own work to naïve audiences, I entered Auburn University’s third annual Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) competition and placed third out of 10 in the final round. I also practice this skill by volunteering to speak to younger students at such events as AU Brain Camp, College of Liberal Arts Day,  MRI Center tours, and guest lectures at a local high school.

I encourage development of communication skills in my students as well. I require at least one writing assignment and one oral communication assignment in each class I teach. For example, in Psychology Research Methods, my students create conference-style posters and we have a mini-conference to end the semester.
